A jury here found Winona Ryder guilty Wednesday of shoplifting nearly $5,500 worth of merchandise from Saks Fifth Avenue’s Beverly Hills store, convicting the actress of felony grand theft and vandalism. Ryder, 31, was cleared of burglary, the third and last count facing her.
Sentencing will take place Dec. 6 and Ryder faces anywhere from probation to a maximum of three years in state prison.
L’Affaire Winona, including the 10-day trial that commenced Oct. 24, had attracted mass media attention since Ryder’s arrest last Dec. 12.
For her part, the actress did a good job of playing the role of somber defendant, appearing in demure Marc Jacobs dresses and coats at pre-trial hearings over the summer, and black dresses and dark jackets from Prada and Jil Sander during the past two weeks. On the trial’s closing day, she wore a white Bill Blass suit and matching Fendi bag.
Much of the proceedings seemed more like comedy, with Ryder attorney Mark Geragos making wisecracks and one-liners while trying to discredit the prosecution.
At one point, he scoffed at the allegation that Ryder vandalized merchandise by cutting holes in clothes when removing the security tags.
“This woman is known for her fashion sense,” he said. “Was she going to start a new line of Winona wear with holes in it?”
He then asked Ryder to stand, took a hair bow that she allegedly stole, placed it on her hair and said, “Can anyone see Ms. Ryder with this on top of her head? Does that make sense?”
Although Saks refused to comment on the verdict, a complete list of items that Ryder took was released during the trial:
