NEW YORK — More than a few of the guests at Saks Fifth Avenue’s holiday luncheon Tuesday had graft on their minds, considering the eight designer co-hosts had each contributed some sort of trinket to the event’s much-hyped gift bag or door prizes. So in the spirit of materialism, WWD asked several participants about their own holiday wish list and it turns out that most of them have visions of automobiles dancing in their head, perhaps in anticipation of a possible transit strike next week.
"Diamonds are forever," said Catherine Malandrino, although she suggested a vintage Ducati she’s been checking out might be more practical.
James Mischka mentioned an obscure classic car, "but I know I’m not going to get it," he said. His design partner Mark Badgley, meanwhile, has his eye on a new Hermès saddle for his horse. Anne Klein designer Charles Nolan said he wants a new paint job for his new Jeep, which arrived in an unpleasant shade of green. "I’m thinking of going with orange," he said.
Others had gifts in mind of a more personal nature. "I’ve never had a watch," Bill Blass designer Lars Nilsson said. "This is maybe the right time. I need to be more on time."
Andrew Bolton, associate curator of The Costume Institute, meanwhile, is searching for a sister for his recently acquired miniature dachshund, Cookie. "That’s Cookie as in the Duchess of Windsor’s nickname for the Queen Mother, as opposed to the biscuit," Bolton said.

“I am of tradition, but that doesn’t mean I have an old outlook on life,” Hubert de Givenchy told WWD in an interview in 1978. The legendary designer, who died last week at the age of 91, achieved wide success soon after launching his own couture boutique in the early ’50s, but he refused to pine for that time. For the first time since its original publication, read our interview with Givenchy on his awe for Audrey Hepburn and looking forward. Link in bio. #wwdarchives #fbf (📷: Pierre Schermann)
About last night: @alexachung and @supergausa toasted the launch of their capsule collection. “It’s the shape that I love, so rather than amend the last and make the sole crazy or do anything wild, we just did really subtle additions that I think make it look really luxe-y,” said Chung. #wwdfashion (📷: Marc Patrick)
