NEW YORK — Saks Inc. will close a 153,000-square-foot Boston Store in the Northridge Mall in Milwaukee in March, affecting 150 workers.

The company said its five other Boston Store units in the Milwaukee area will remain open. They are in the Mayfair Mall, Bayshore Mall, Southridge Mall, Brookfield Mall and in the Grand Avenue Mall in downtown.

At the Northridge unit, associates will either be offered transfers to other area stores or a severance package. Michael R. MacDonald, president of the Northern Department Stores Group of Saks Inc., and chief executive of Carson Pirie Scott & Co. (which includes Boston Store), commented: “After careful consideration, we believe the interests of both our customers and our company are best served by closing our Northridge store and concentrating our resources on our other surrounding-area locations. This action is consistent with our focus on improving our returns on invested capital. Milwaukee remains an important market for our company.”

Milwaukee is also the headquarters for Carson Pirie Scott & Co., which includes the merchandising, advertising/marketing and support functions for Carson’s, Bergner’s, Boston Store and Herberger’s. Next month, the company’s Des Moines, Iowa-based Younkers’ headquarters will be consolidated into the Milwaukee offices, bringing the total employment there to about 725 associates. At the end of March, the company will employ approximately 2,500 associates in metropolitan Milwaukee.

Saks Inc. operates the Saks Department Store Group with 245 department stores under the names of Parisian, Proffitt’s, McRae’s, Younkers, Herberger’s, Carson Pirie Scott, Bergner’s and Boston Store. Saks Inc. also operates Saks Fifth Avenue Enterprises, which consists of 61 Saks Fifth Avenue stores and 52 Saks Off 5th stores.
