NEW YORK — Sears, Roebuck & Co. tapped Carrie Shigetomi for vice president of brand development, filling a position that had been open for two years.

Shigetomi takes her new job Sept. 19 and will report to Mindy Meads, executive vice president and general manager of apparel.

Most recently, Shigetomi worked at Calvin Klein Inc. as vice president of design administration and product development. Before joining Klein in 1998, she held positions at Polo Ralph Lauren Leathergoods, Ellen Tracy and Cole-Haan.

In her new job, Shigetomi is responsible for design of the firm’s private brand product lines for apparel, accessories and footwear, which include Covington, Apostrophe and Canyon River Blues. Additionally, she will help establish the short- and long-term strategies for apparel product development.

“Carrie is highly regarded in the fashion industry and a proven leader with deep experience in brand building,” said Meads in a statement. “She will play a critical role in Sears’ strategy to build our national and private apparel brand offering.”

Meads, who came on board with Sears when the firm acquired Lands’ End in May 2002, took over control of the retailer’s apparel business in April, succeeding Kathryn Bufano.

Last year, Sears’ total retail operations produced sales of $35.7 billion and generated operating income of $1.16 billion.
