Italia Independent: Lapo Elkann, scion of the Fiat dynasty, made a splash earlier this year with the launch of his own lifestyle brand, Italia Independent. The first product — carbon-fiber sunglasses — sold out, so it was only natural that the fashion crowd's interest piqued when invites arrived touting a "new tactile experience." In Elkann-ese, that translated into a sophisticatedly technical collection filled with "seasonless" pieces. "Seasons only exist for marketing purposes," Elkann mused. Working with Gore-Tex, he and his creative team used an exclusive stretch version of the high-performance fabric for lightweight, cropped parkas. Another partnership with DuPont and Italian tailor Confezioni Sartena resulted in a sleek smoking jacket made out of Cordura with a finish to make it wind- and water-resistant. Finally, a Kevlar duffel bag means you'll never have to worry about rain, snow or overzealous baggage handlers again. Meanwhile, Elkann is expanding his fashion repertoire by buying a stake in an organic denim and T-shirt brand called Care Label, which will launch later this fall.
