NEW YORK — A memorial service will be held Saturday for Joanne Lesko Gindek, a packaging designer who died of liver cancer Monday at her home in Ridgefield, Conn. She was 66.

Gindek, a graduate of New York’s Pratt Institute, pursued a career spanning 40 years. After taking her first job with Cheeseborough Ponds, Gindek eventually moved to Elizabeth Arden, where she designed the packaging for the Chloé fragrance, not only sculpting the bottle but also creating the ad visuals.
But Gindek made her biggest mark on beauty during a 30-year tenure at Revlon. She served as vice president of creative for Princess Marcella Borghese, then one of Revlon’s prestige brands. She was credited with breaking ground in packaging design by creating multipiece compacts, one of hundreds of individual creations across packaging design, advertising and merchandising displays.
“She was a fine artist and an original thinker,” said close friend Mona Monaghan, a 20-year associate who is now executive vice president and general manager of Sally Hansen, a division of Del Laboratories. During the Borghese years, Monaghan worked along with Gindek as senior vice president of marketing.
After leaving Revlon, Gindek began her own consulting firm with Monaghan in 1997 called Marketing Made to Order, where her beauty industry clients ranged from Del to Nordstrom to Chanel. Gindek and Monaghan were partners there. “She was my business partner and my best friend,” Monaghan remarked.
Gindek is survived by longtime companion Leslie Rowe. A memorial service has been planned for Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Hull Funeral Home on 60 Division Street in Danbury, Conn. Flowers can be sent to that address.
