MARKETING BURTON: Bryan Johnston has joined Burton Snowboards as vice president of marketing. Having worked in the sporting goods business for the past 20 years, he was most recently marketing director for Salomon North America.

Johnston will oversee all aspects of marketing, including team management, advertising, catalogs, Web sites, product packaging, public relations and event management. He is based at Burton’s Burlington, Vt., office and reports to Laurent Potdevin, president.

Salomon does not plan to replace Johnston, opting to divvy up his responsibilities among the marketing team he assembled.

“Brian put together a really strong marketing team and our ceo, James Curleigh, has a lot of confidence in that group,” said Hal Thomson, public relations and communications manager.

ADVANTAGE AUSTIN: Former tennis pro Tracy Austin will be wearing Celanese and Nicole Miller when she takes to the airwaves next month covering the U.S. Open, an event she won twice in her career.

For her upcoming USA Networks broadcasts, she visited Miller’s store at Sunset Plaza in Los Angeles last week to pick out 10 outfits. Celanese suits in ruby red and navy were among her finds.

In a phone interview Wednesday, Austin said she usually wears pieces from one designer throughout the two-week broadcast and often works from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. She wore Miller’s clothes four or five years ago and likes how they are “young, stylish and colorful.” Viewers often phone, e-mail or tell her firsthand what they think of her outfits.

“People pay attention to what people wear and I’m not just saying that because I’m an announcer,” Austin said. “I know when I’m watching the news, I always check out what earrings and clothes they’re wearing. Is it stylish? Is it trendy? To me, appearance is part of your job. It’s a package. You have to know tennis, look the best you can with your hair, makeup and clothes and be professional.”

As for how female pros convey their personal style, Austin praised Chandra Rubin and Amanda Coetzer for their clean, crisp on-court attire. Serena Williams, on the other hand, was a little over-the-top in her catsuit last year, Austin said.

“It showed off her body but it didn’t look comfortable,” she said. “But that’s what Serena and Venus are known for. They like to try to start fashion trends. I’ve got to give Serena credit for trying to buck tradition.”
