NO FABRICATION: Athletic brands aren’t the only apparel firms talking up their ties to the U.S. Open. DuPont representatives called editors Wednesday to clue them in that Serena Williams’ catsuit is made of Lycra spandex. Celanese Acetate is also at work in Flushing Meadows. UNDER ARMOUR’S SCREENPLAY: Under Armour performance apparel launches its first TV ad campaign Saturday during ABC’s "Kickoff Classic" football game between Notre Dame and the University of Maryland. NFL defensive end Eric Ogbogu appears sprinting and lifting in the spot. Unlike its competitors, Under Armour does not identify him, nor any of the other athletes who appear in its ads. Instead of endorsement deals, the brand pays them for their time and travel expenses and gives them merchandise. Known for its compression garments designed to help muscles recover during exercise, the Baltimore-based company expects this year’s annual sales to more than double to $60 million. The Baltimore-based company provides activewear to Major League Baseball, the National Hockey League, the U.S. ski team and other elite groups. The brand unveils its women’s line this fall.
MURRAY MOVES UP: Steve Murray has been promoted to chief marketing officer of Vans from senior vice president of international, product merchandising and apparel. In this newly created position, he oversees all product and marketing initiatives for the company. He previously managed the company’s European subsidiaries and distribution partnerships. Prior to joining Vans in 1998, Murray was vice president, global apparel, at Reebok.
@chanel and @pharrell dropped what’s being dubbed as the world’s most exclusive sneakers yesterday. The Adidas Originals NMD Hu, which Williams designed in collaboration with Chanel and @adidasoriginals, has a waiting list of over 120K people who pre-registered online at chanelatcolette.fr –– and only 500 pairs are on sale. @louisvuitton tapped @therealpeterlindbergh for its latest city-centric photo book, which is part of a series called Fashion Eye. “I just wanted to create this fully rounded character, but I do think what excited me most was just the opportunity to give a group of people representation that I feel needs it.
