IRELAND'S LANDSLIDE: The Kathy Ireland line of swimwear that was launched in Kmart this year is already selling "incredibly well," according to a spokeswoman for the chain. Bestsellers include a black one-piece style with a mesh top and a cotton crocheted style in both a one-piece and two-piece cut.
Now, Kmart is running a 30 percent promotion on Ireland's line. The swim-wear is retailing from $13.99 to $20.99. According to the spokeswoman, that's normal for the store this time of year. "It's a category-wide sale, and swimwear is a very promotional category," she said.
SURF'S UP: Sales of swimwear featured in the Swimwear Edition '94 catalog by Victoria's Secret doubled the initial projection, according to Cynthia Fedus, president of the Victoria's Secret Catalog division of The Limited.
The catalog, introduced in March, also features some activewear. Company officials would not give figures, but industry sources estimate first-year sales of swimwear will exceed $10 million. The results were celebrated last month at a party for some two dozen swimwear vendors -- hosted by Leslie H. Wexner, chairman and chief executive officer of The Limited -- at the new Victoria's Secret offices in New York. The retailer moved into its new 40,000-square-foot location at 1114 Sixth Ave. in March. Some two dozen swimwear vendors were there.
NORDICTRACK GAME PLAN: A NordicTrack Fitness At Home specialty store will open in New York on June 17 at 650 Madison Ave., near East 57th Street. The 1,911-square-foot unit will house NordicTrack sports equipment and branded and private label activewear for men and women.
The Chaska, Minn.-based manufacturer opened a NordicTrack Factory Direct outlet in New York on May 21. The 3,900-square-foot outlet has all NordicTrack sports equipment and branded and private label sports apparel. It is at 202 Park Avenue South, at East 17th Street.
The units are part of the firm's Nordic Advantage retail division.
PIVOT OUTFITS YOUNG GOLFERS: Pivot Rules, a New York-based golf lifestyle sportswear firm, will be outfiting the 60 high school students participating in the City of New York Department of Parks & Recreation High School Golf Championship -- the golf championship for public and parochial high school students from the five boroughs, set for June 7 at La Tourette golf course in Staten Island, N.Y. The sportswear firm will also provide refreshments and trophies at the event. Pivot plans to sponsor the winners at the upcoming Jim Murphy Memorial Tournament in September.
