NEW YORK — Virginia Smith, who announced last week that she was leaving her role as vice president of public relations at Calvin Klein, has been named fashion director, market, for Vogue. She succeeds Wendy Hirschberg Clurman, who, as reported, resigned from that post Monday.

“Wendy was with Vogue for over 10 years and did a fantastic job for the magazine; she’ll be missed but I’m looking forward to continuing to work with her in the future,” Vogue’s editor in chief Anna Wintour said in a statement, adding that she is pleased to recruit “someone with Virginia’s expertise and talent.”

In her new post, Smith will supervise the communication between Vogue’s fashion department and the major fashion houses, overseeing all the clothes called in for the magazine’s fashion portfolios. She also will scout young designers and look out for designs to be featured in the magazine’s fashion portfolios.

Hirschberg is moving on to pursue a freelance career as a fashion consultant, although she will remain in her post until Smith begins Sept 3.

Smith has worked for Calvin Klein for six years and prior to that worked in public relations for Anne Klein for eight years.”
