PARIS —Expedition chic — that's the mission designers are going on for spring, as they explore safari and tribal territory.

Jean Paul Gaultier took Hermès on a jaunt to the far reaches of India for spring, complete with colorful turbans, sari-like getups and a backdrop dusted with spices. But with a major ready-to-wear push under way at the company, Gaultier reined in his references just right, delivering a collection that veered more toward commercial than camp.
