The long marriage of sugar tycoon Pepe Fanjul and his wife, Emilia, the subject of constant gossip and speculation among the international rich and famous group, is finally over and out after being on and off for months. It was thought that the marriage would finally stick after the Fanjuls made peace and left earlier in the summer for a trip to Europe together. But, as from the beginning of the troubles, Pepe never really lost the interest in Nina Griscom that kept him off balance for years.
In the turbulent interval, Nina divorced her husband, the New York plastic surgeon, Dr. Dan Baker, and has set off on her own. Will Pepe be far behind? Of course, not. They are now in Palm Beach together. Pepe has moved out of the Fanjul house in Palm Beach which Emilia will occupy, and she has moved out of their beautiful Fifth Avenue apartment. What is most admirable in the whole mess is Emilia’s extraordinary behavior throughout. She is and always has been 100 percent a lady. But when Emilia finally told Pepe goodbye, it was goodbye.
