HAULING FOR BURLINGTON: As Burlington Industries Inc. has expanded its operations overseas through its Hong Kong-based outsourcing operation, its shipping needs have become more complicated. So the Greensboro, N.C.-based mill has enlisted UPS Supply Chain Solutions to handle all of its logistics going forward. The transition is expected to take place in February, according to a Burlington spokeswoman.
Since UPS will be responsible for international as well as domestic transportation, Burlington’s in-house trucking and transportation division will be phased out. It employs roughly 130 people, though some will stay on in other roles if possible, the spokeswoman said.
"By utilizing UPS’s extensive infrastructure of facilities, people, systems and expertise, we are able to move our business to the next level and immediately connect our developing network of global partner mills," said George W. Henderson III, chairman and chief executive officer.
TAIWANESE T-400: Now that the U.S. government considers T-400 its own class of fiber, DuPont Textiles and Interiors is ready to roll it out and has entered a 50-50 joint venture with Taiwan-based Shinkong Synthetic Fibers Corporation to manufacture T-400 for the Asian market.
Under the partnership, Shinkong will handle production while DTI will provide technological expertise as well as marketing support through the Lycra brand. Production is scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2003, with plans to install additional spinning machines as demand grows. DTI’s current T-400 production at its Chattanooga, Tenn., factory will be used solely for the North American and European markets once the Taiwan factory is up and running.
"The joint venture combines our science and marketing capability with technical operations where demand is the greatest," said Steve McCracken, DTI president. "T-400 is positioned between spandex and textured yarns and brings to us a new price and volume opportunity."
As reported, earlier this month, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission granted approval for a new generic subclass to T-400.
