NEW YORK — Accessory company Tandy Brands has partnered with the holders of the license for Dr. Martens, Airwair International Ltd., and R Griggs Group Ltd., to manufacture and distribute men’s leather accessories under the Dr. Martens label. The accessory collection, which will also include young men’s and women’s leather belts, wallets and bags, is scheduled to launch in the U.S. and Canada for spring 2009. Some strategic distribution will take place during the 2008 holiday season.

“This iconic brand is recognized around the world and has been closely associated with youth subcultures and music since the 1960s,” said Tandy Brands CEO J.S.B. Jenkins in a statement Tuesday. “A key aspect of our long-term strategy is to secure a strong and diversified base of licenses to extend our sales opportunities and to further our reputation as a market-leading partner for belts and leather goods.”

The announcement comes after Tandy Brands posted disappointing third-quarter results last week. Revenue fell more than 20 percent to $30 million from $37.9 million, for the same period a year ago. The Arlington, Texas-based company attributed the decline to the challenging retail environment.
