Pop star stylist Hayley Hill says young pop performers shouldn’t look too sexy too soon. Do teens agree? WWD went straight to the source to find out. We asked girls outside Louis D. Brandeis High and La Guardia High School of Art, Music and Performing Arts: How sexy is too sexy? Although their concepts of sexy dressing vary, they all have firm ideas about the boundaries of what’s appropriate. Cindy,16, said that if someone came to school looking too sexed-up, “Guys would fresh you up.” Lydia, 18, said, “School is for studying, not to provoke anyone.”

What is sexy?

Angie, 15: “Hip-huggers and short skirts.”

Taryn, 17: “Sexiness has a lot to do with the person and the aura they give. They could be sexy in ripped jeans and an old T-shirt.”

Kristen, 17: “When your underwear sticks out of your pants, that’s where I draw the line.”

Cindy, 16: “Sexy is a nice shirt showing some breasts and a short skirt or tight jeans.” Dressing like that isn’t good for school, though. Guys would fresh you up.”

Lydia, 18: “The violin can be sexy if it is played well — but I’m still working on it.”‘

Are pop stars too sexy?

Ginette, 15: “Britney Spears is too sexy. Then guys think we should wear that, but I think short skirts and boots are sexy.”

Bernice, 17: “They can wear whatever they want. They have to promote their image, and if wearing those clothes gets them more money, that’s what they have to do.”

Lydia, 18: “When Britney Spears started she wasn’t as sexy as she is now. There are five-year-old kids singing her songs and they see her dressing like this — it’s not a good thing. Nicole Kidman doesn’t overdo it, but she still looks good.”

Floricia, 17: “Janet Jackson is sexy. It’s too early for Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears to be going in Janet’s direction. They haven’t earned respect.”

Lena, 17: “I think it is ridiculous how MTV censors certain words (drugs and sex), but then Britney Spears can run around in a bra.”

Do you wear sexy clothes? When and where?

Loraine, 14: “I like to dress in loose clothes, but for a party I like skirts with matching shirts.”

Maggie, 17: “I wear jeans and T-shirts all the time. If I go to a party, then I will wear a skirt that I made maybe.”

Bernice, 17: “On weekends I wear tight pants and little shirts to be sexier.”

Shivonne, 16: “I like jeans. If I go to a party, then it has to be a matching shirt and matching shoes.”
