One of fashion week’s most pondered questions — “Where’s Burt?” — was answered, at least partially, Wednesday afternoon. Burt Tansky, president and chief executive officer of Neiman Marcus Group, came out of hiding after missing some key fashion shows this week. Usually a high scorer in the attendance category, Tansky was a no-show at various majors, such as Carolina Herrera, Oscar de la Renta, Marc Jacobs and Michael Kors, but finally came out to support…Carmen Marc Valvo. “It’s a big business, and an important business to us,” he said. After the show, he went directly to the Elie Tahari showroom to see the fall presentation.
Tansky declined to discuss rumors swirling around this week that Neiman Marcus could be in play, and when asked where he’s been all week, replied, “I’ve been running around. I haven’t seen many shows. I’ve been meeting with vendors and all our people.” Of course, most of his key people have been at the shows, but let’s not split hairs.
In fact, some of his top executives joked at the Michael Kors show that Tansky was back at the office “probably selling the business,” and were excited about the prospects of cashing in their options and not having to sit at a Marc Jacobs show next season, waiting an hour-and-a-half for it to begin.
Turning to the state of business, Tansky said January sales were up 12.2 percent, following a very good November and December. “We’re looking for new fashions, and waiting for next season. I love fashion,” he proclaimed.
