PROM AND PAGEANT: SCALA

Clean but sexy prom and pageant gowns are making Scala Eveningwear all the rage with fashion-minded teens. The body-conscious styles, including fitted and beaded halter dresses, slinky columns and portrait-back entrance makers are also a hit among parents who appreciate the value-driven price tags.

CHILDREN’S WEAR: CHICKEN NOODLE

Bright and whimsical prints — from kittens to clowns — that little girls love are the signature at Chicken Noodle, a moderate to better label that’s mostly found in specialty stores. Co-owner and designer April Ward, along with her husband and co-owner Rory Ward, founded the company about 12 years ago, with headquarters in Oakland, Calif

MEN’S: BARRY BRICKEN

Barry Bricken started designing men’s clothing in the Seventies when he and his brother took over the family men’s pant business in Baltimore with the goal of raising the quality and pricing. Bricken moved to New York and made his mark under his own label by tailoring British tweeds and Italian flannels into clean, classic clothing. Bricken also has a women’s collection and seven stores nationwide, including one in Dallas, and more to come.

SPORTSWEAR: CHRISTINE PHILLIPE

A heavy dose of novelty is just what the doctor ordered for Christine Phillipe, who has created a $10-million-a-year business by jazzing up sportswear with beading and embroidery. "About four years ago, I really concentrated on a new stretch fabric and unusual novelty-decorated sportswear because I didn’t see much of that in the market," Phillipe reflected. "Our customer is 25 to 75 and she wants to look special and be noticed. She feels like a movie star whether she is a size 16 or a size 2." The award came as a big surprise to Phillipe, even though she has seen her Dallas business grow considerably over the past year. "It feels heavenly," she sighed. " We are so honored to have won this, you have no idea."
