FLORENCE — “Someone should do a film on Emilio Pucci’s amazing life. And you,” gushed Kylie Minogue, turning to friend and Pucci creative director Matthew Williamson, “should play Emilio.”
Conceding he doesn’t quite have Pucci’s good looks or aristocratic blood, Williamson acknowledged he would do his best if he were ever asked.
Film aside, about 400 guests swished and swooshed around the 14th century Palazzo Pucci here in their Pucci regalia on Saturday night to attend the brand’s 60th anniversary dinner, cohosted by Laudomia Pucci and Delphine Arnault, daughter of LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton chief and Pucci owner Bernard Arnault.
Longtime Pucci fan Elizabeth Hurley and husband Arun Nayar, Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, the U.S Ambassador Ronald P. Spogli, jet-set couple Ugo and Isabella Brachetti Peretti, Filippo and Giorgiana Corsini, Arielle de Rothschild and Ferruccio and Leonardo Ferragamo mingled leisurely.
Looking up at Gerard Cholot’s installation of printed hot air balloons floating in the courtyard, Hurley offered her favorite Pucci hue. “I love the blue. I have a vintage petticoat with a blue print that I turned into a skirt. It’s so distinctive.”
Dinner was served in the Sala Bianca, a white stuccoed ballroom dotted with colored 19th century busts the late designer personalized to break up the color monotony of the space where he held his runway shows.
Upstairs, Williamson’s office was remodeled for the night to become the store it was in the Fifties, complete with phantasmagoria-colored walls, white wood-framed cabinets and vintage blouses, tunics, costume jewelry and eyewear displayed on tables.
As Prince Michael indulged with macro shades from the Seventies, his wife said, “This brings back memories. I remember walking in the store as a young girl. What an extraordinary man and what great times.”
