Though Keith Richards’ June 1973 drug and weapons arrest in England set an ominous tone for The Rolling Stones’ fall 1973 European tour, you wouldn’t have known it from WWD’s coverage of a top-secret Stones bash on Sept. 6.
According to the report, Mick Jagger and then-wife Bianca (who looked stunning in Zandra Rhodes and carried “her trademark walking stick”) caused quite a stir at the entrance to Blenheim Palace, where the couple and friends celebrated the Stones’ upcoming London shows.
The invitations “bore neither time nor place,” but boldfacers such as Penelope Tree, Marisa Berenson and Zandra Rhodes herself somehow made their way to the remote Oxfordshire, England, estate, carrying on, our reporter noted, “as if they owned the gardens.”
Photographer David Bailey, however, was less than impressed with the soirée. He quipped to WWD, “I’ve come all this way, and I’m going to ruin my new shoes on the gravel.”
