Jan. 5: Despite the sputtering economy, Carolina Herrera forges ahead with new stores, sharper pricing and an aggressive rollout of CH Herrera.

Jan. 8:
Matthew Williamson launches men’s wear.

Jan. 11: Mayor Bloomberg’s office launches fashion NYC 2020 — a yearlong initiative to brainstorm about the future and ramp-up the city’s presence as a global fashion force.

Jan. 12: Fashion gets into the billion-dollar video game industry with a game based on “Project Runway” and other fashion-related games.

Jan. 13:
Soon after designing a children’s collection for Gap, Stella McCartney joins with another all-American megabrand — Disney — for limited edition costume jewelry in anticipation of the March release of Tim Burton’s 3-D film “Alice in Wonderland.” In September, McCartney says she’ll do her own children’s line.

Jan. 14: Sarah Jessica Parker signs on with Halston Heritage, the fabled brand’s secondary line, as president and chief creative officer.

Jan. 19: Madewell and Alexa Chung team up for a fall capsule collection, the brand’s first celebrity collaboration.

Jan. 22: Julia Roberts’ latest role: global ambassador for Lancôme.


Jan. 26: Teen blogger Tavi Gevinson sits front row at John Galliano’s Dior couture show, along with Pierre Cardin, who was working at the house with Monsieur Dior launched his famous New Look.


Jan. 29: Narciso Rodriguez collaborates with eBay for a capsule eight-piece spring collection of matte jersey dresses and denim suits at a considerably lower price point ($75 for a T-shirt; $350 for a reversible cotton coat).

Feb. 1:
The CFDA names its Fashion Incubator Designers. Labels include Alice Ritter, Bibhu Mohapatra, Prabal Gurung, Sophie Theallett, Rachel Pooley, Grey Ant, House of Waris, Jolibe, Lewis, Public School, Ruby Kobo and Subversive.

Feb. 1: Bloomingdale’s opens the first of two stores in Dubai.

Feb. 2:
Momentum builds for Beyoncé’s new Coty fragrance, Beyoncé Heat, illuminating Union Square Park.

Feb. 3: The Olsen’s junior line, Olsenboye, launches at J.C. Penney, and later in the month, they stage their first runway show for The Row.

Feb. 9: Hermès opens a men’s flagship on Madison Avenue.

Feb. 15: Naomi Campbell gets the fashion crowd roaring at the Fashion for Relief Show to benefit earthquake-ravaged Haiti.


Feb. 16: Donna Karan celebrates her house’s 25th anniversary.

Feb. 16:
Martin Scorsese directs Chanel’s TV commercial for its men’s fragrance.

Feb. 18: A new power player emerges on the drugstore scene as Walgreens says it will acquire Duane Reade for $1.1 billion.

Feb. 18: Coach creative head Reed Krakoff launches his first apparel collection under his own label.


Feb. 19: President Obama criticizes Weatherproof for using his image in its advertising.

Feb. 23: Crowds pack fast-fashion retailer H&M for its latest designer collaboration, with Sonia Rykiel.


March 2: Roberto Cavalli marks 40 years in fashion with a wild collection replete with his signature animal patterns and furs — clothes for a roaring good time.


March 30: Selena Gomez’s juniors collection, Dream Out Loud, makes its debut at Kmart.

April 9: Punk pioneer Malcolm McLaren dies. Outspoken and often brash, he helped turn the Sex Pistols into a cultural force called “punk” and with his one-time paramour Vivienne Westwood, created a fashion movement to go along with it.


April 16: Jennifer Aniston bottles her easygoing beauty into her first fragrance, Lolavie.

April 16: The CFDA presents Bill Clinton with a $1 million donation for Haiti, raised from the sales of the $25 Fashion for Haiti T-shirts.
April 20: Vera Wang, who has dressed everyone from Chelsea Clinton to Jennifer Lopez on their big days, signs a long-term agreement with mass retailer David’s Bridal. Wang also marked her 20th year in business.
April 21: Juicy Couture taps Erin Fetherston as guest designer and creative consultant.


April 28: Giorgio Armani lands in Dubai, opening his first hotel there. It encompasses eight floors of the Burj Khalifa tower, the tallest building in the world.


April 28: Marc Jacobs is the only fashion designer to land on this year’s Time 100 list of people who most affect the world. He was interviewed by friend and fellow designer Victoria Beckham for the piece.
April 30:
Mary J. Blige launches a fragrance with Carol’s Daughter called My Life, named for her landmark 1994 recording of the same name.

May 3: Chopard hosts its 150th anniversary party at the Frick Collection, with John Legend serenading guests including Christina Ricci, Claire Danes, Gwyneth Paltrow and Kate Hudson.


May 3: Cover Girl signs Taylor Swift as its next celebrity face, while Diane Kruger will be the model for Calvin Klein’s latest fragrance, Calvin Klein Beauty. Days later, Angela Lindvall becomes the newest face of John Hardy.

May 4: Katy Perry absolutely glowed, literally, in a light-up dress at The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s annual Costume Institute gala for the “American Woman” exhibit where Lady Gaga performed.

May 6: Starting next spring, Sean John’s men’s sportswear collection will be carried exclusively in Macy’s stores, macys.com and Sean John stores.

May 14: British retailer Brown’s celebrates 40 years in business.

May 14: Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce launch Dolce & Gabbana’s The One Gentleman fragrance in preparation for the 20th anniversary of their men’s collection.


May 17: Lindsay Lohan’s line 6126 branches into handbags, while Kim Kardashian and Bebe launch a costume jewelry collection together.


May 18: Estée Lauder says it will purchase Smashbox cosmetics.

May 18: “Sex and the City 2” is released, giving Carrie wannabes a much-needed dose of Patricia Field styling.

May 18: Diane von Furstenberg receives the Talley Lifetime Achievement Award at the Savannah College of Art and Design.

May 26: Giles Deacon is named creative director of Emanuel Ungaro. He is the sixth person to hold the post in the four years since its founder resigned, the most recent of which was Lindsay Lohan.


May 27: Alessandro Dell’Acqua is tapped as creative director of the Brioni’s women’s line.

May 27: J. Crew opens its first bridal boutique.

May 27: Hermès says it will part ways with Jean-Paul Gaultier. Christophe Lemaire, who is also the creative director for Lacoste, will take over at the luxury house.


June 7: Marc Jacobs, Marcus Wainwright and David Neville, Richard Chai, Alexis Bittar and Alexander Wang are among winners at the CFDA awards, and Iman is honored as this year’s fashion icon.


June 10: Net-a-porter says it will start a men’s site in January 2011, supplying 60 brands including Ralph Lauren, Burberry and Dunhill.

June 16:
Rachel Zoe joins the ranks of celebs-cum-designers with an LF USA apparel deal.



July 2: Victoria Beckham is named creative design executive at Range Rover, starting with the special edition Range Rover Evoque model.


July 2: “Las Vegas is the shopping capital of the U.S.,” says Pamela Baxter, president and ceo of Christian Dior Couture USA, as the French luxury brand opens its fourth store in Sin City.

July 9: Hundreds of celebrities, socialites and beautiful people like Natalia Vodianova stormed Valentino’s Wideville Estate outside Paris to help the retired designer fete his new Valentino Garavani Archives.


July 9: LVMH titan Bernard Arnault is named the richest man in France by Challenges magazine. His fortune is estimated at 22.7 billion euros (that’s $28.6 billion). 

July 12: “If you’re a luxury brand and you don’t think you’re being counterfeited, you’re living in a cave,” intellectual property lawyer Harley Lewin says, noting that counterfeit business is soaring despite harder government crackdowns, costing legitimate businesses an estimated $250 billion per year and the loss of 750,000 jobs annually.

July 14: “I love women with bigger bottoms and larger thighs,” says 21-year-old Daisy Lowe — model, “It” girl, and daughter of rocker and Bush front man Gavin Rossdale — as she launches a clothing line for the French fashion chain Morgan.

July 15: A collection of 10 dresses worn by Princess Diana (from designers like British couturier Catherine Walker and Gianni Versace) goes on display at the Bath Fashion Museum in England.


July 19: “Che bello” is heard through crowds of spectators in Milan as George Clooney appears in court to battle three people accused of using his name to sell clothes. “I came here because I believe in the judicial system and because there were people using my name to take advantage of other people,” Clooney testifies. He denies signing an agreement with the firm GC Exclusive to produce fashion apparel under his name.


July 22: “I am a product whore,” admits Katy Perry, revealing plans to launch her first fragrance — Purr by Katy Perry.


July 30: It’s a date worth a pretty penny. Anna Wintour opens her home to President Obama and fashion’s elite to host a Democratic fund-raiser. Partygoers like Donna Karan and Calvin Klein shell out more than $30,000 a piece and raise nearly $1.5 million for the opportunity to dine with the Commander in Chief.


Aug. 3: Ivanka Trump launches a fine jewelry line and licensed shoe and handbag collections.

Aug. 4: Taylor Momsen turns up at Macy’s as the face of Madonna’s new Material Girl juniors line.

Aug. 17: Maroon 5 front man Adam Levine joins the ranks of music stars like Justin Timberlake, Madonna and Jay-Z, launching fashion label 222.

Aug. 20: Tommy Hilfiger introduces fragrances for younger people — “riff on rose” and “patchouli.”

Aug. 23: The long search for a ceo is over at Barneys New York, which names Mark Lee, former Gucci ceo, as its new chief. Within a few months, he taps former Gucci exec Daniella Vitale to head all women’s and barneys.com operations, replacing longtime evp/gmm Judy Collinson. Fashion director Julie Gilhart also departs.

Aug. 25: Avon discloses its singing contest initiative, Avon Voices, tied to the company’s 125th anniversary celebration. Among the judges: Fergie.

Aug. 26: Kellwood buys Adam Lippes’ Adam contemporary brand.

Aug. 30: Geoffroy de la Bourdonnaye takes over at Chloé as ceo, replacing Ralph Toledano after 11 years at the helm.


Aug. 30: Bono and his wife, Ali Hewson, star in Louis Vuitton’s “Core Values” ad campaign wearing Edun — the ethical clothing line the couple launched in 2005 to promote trade with Africa — not Vuitton.


Aug. 31: Jones Apparel Group signs a license with Brian Atwood to produce a contemporary line named B Brian.

Sept. 1: The name Lanvin surfaces as the next designer collaboration for H&M. By November it’s a reality, as throngs would storm the fast-fashion retailer across the U.S. to get a piece of the Lanvin (Hearts) H&M collection.

Sept. 3: When Betsey Johnson defaults on $48.8 million loan, Steven Madden steps in to rescue — and take over — the brand. A month later, Chantal Bacon, Johnson’s right-hand woman for 30 years, leaves her role as ceo.


Sept. 7: Reed Krakoff makes a retail statement — 1,800 square feet of it — with his first stand-alone store at 69th and Madison.

Sept. 8: New York Fashion Week’s new home at Lincoln Center is inaugurated with a public theater/fashion show hybrid also known as Fashion’s Night Out: The Show.

Sept. 13: Nicola Formichetti, aka Lady Gaga’s stylist, is named creative director of Thierry Mugler.

Sept. 16: Rumors swirl that Theory’s Andrew Rosen has his eye on Proenza Schouler.

Sept. 16: Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana share the retail love with Spiga2, a multibrand boutique in Milan, in which the designers handpick from the collections of their peers.

Sept. 16: Hermès unveils a luxury brand designed specifically for the Chinese market called Shang Xia, which means “up down” in Chinese.

Sept. 21: Marc Jacobs launches e-commerce. The long-anticipated e-retail comes just before the designer’s Marc by Marc Jacobs business marks its 10th anniversary.


Sept. 23: Madonna and child (Lourdes) take Macy’s Manhattan for the Material Girl launch.

Oct. 1: Roberto Cavalli celebrates his 40th year in business with a blow-out bash at Paris’ Fine Arts School, complete with performances by Kylie Minogue and the Crazy Horse cabaret dancers. Also in the house: Janet Jackson, Tyra Banks, Bianca Jagger, Taylor Swift and Heidi Klum, who cuts the birthday cake alongside the designer.

Oct. 4: 3-D specs get a stylish upgrade with the debut of polarized 3-D sunglasses by Marchon International. Participating brands include Nike, ck Calvin Klein Eyewear, Nautica Eyewear and M3D.


Oct. 4: Donna Karan dishes it out — literally. The designer offers her first tabletop and giftware collection of serving pieces, flatware, stemware and barware, in collaboration with Lenox Corp.

Oct. 5: Jason Wu makes his mark on another First Lady. The designer goes home to Taipei, Taiwan, and meets president Ma Ying-jeou; Wu presents Mrs. Ma with a dress from his collection.

Oct. 6: Sarah Burton unveils her first collection for Alexander McQueen — and the critics love it. “As first steps go, this was fabulous,” WWD writes.

Oct. 6: Retail veteran Burton M. Tansky steps down as president and chief executive officer of The Neiman Marcus Group.

Oct. 13: Phillip Lim takes over the Forbidden City in Beijing with a runway show at the Dong Bian Men Watchtower. He also unveils four film collaborations with Lane Crawford, each directed by a different artist in New York, Paris, Beijing and Hong Kong.


Oct. 19: WWD captures First Lady Michelle Obama heading into Donna Karan’s Upper West Side apartment for a cocktail party as part of her multistate Democratic campaign swing, wearing a camel-colored coat over a dark dress — by Karan, natch.


Oct. 25: Eau, Justin! Tween, teen and twitter heartthrob Justin Bieber breaks into the fragrance arena with My World. He also breaks convention by packaging the unisex perfume into wristbands and dog tags, not glass bottles.


Oct. 28: Derek Lam signs with eBay to create an exclusive collection to be presented during New York Fashion Week in February.


Nov. 2: Kate Moss unveils her last official collection for Topshop in London, comprising 109 styles. Topshop owner Sir Phillip Green says the supermodel and the retailer expect to continue to work together on projects in the future, although for now they are taking a break.


Nov. 4: WWD celebrates 100 years with a party at Cipriani 42nd Street, with Karen Elson serenading the packed house with “Happy Birthday.”


Nov. 5: Jimmy Choo goes from shoes to juice, launching its first fragrance, to hit stores in January.

Nov. 8: The Jackson brothers, along with the estate of their late brother Michael, introduce their first licensed apparel line under the J5 Collection name, commemorating their decades as The Jackson 5.


Nov. 11: Gap enters China with a store in Shanghai, the first of four wholly owned Gap stores in that nation set to open by the end of the year.

Nov. 15: The 500-pound gorilla is in the house: Google says it is venturing into fashion with a new Web site and virtual designer boutiques, allowing viewers to create personalized shops and select style preferences, brands and items they love.

Nov. 16: Billy Reid takes the top prize at the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund awards, with Prabal Gurung and Eddie Borgo named runners-up.

Nov. 16: In a surprising move, Vera Wang closes her directly owned bridesmaid business, with that category shifting to David’s Bridal, for which Wang designs a less-expensive bridal line. The bridesmaid dresses will retail from $150 to $200 starting next June.


Nov. 18: Tommy Hilfiger opens a massive flagship on the Champs-Elysées. The 8,850-square-foot store, his largest in Europe and packed with rock ’n’ roll and vintage touches, unabashedly celebrates the American lifestyle.


Nov. 18: Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony form a lifestyle fashion venture with Kohl’s, to include women’s and men’s apparel and other categories. It could eventually become a $3 billion brand for the retailer.

Nov. 23: Dior wins the bidding for the iconic 1955 photo “Dovima and the Elephants” by Richard Avedon, which features the legendary model wearing a Dior Cirque d’Hiver evening dress. The price? A cool $1.1 million.

Dec. 8: John Galliano swoops into New York for the reopening of Dior’s 57th Street flagship, which underwent a five-month renovation.
