Who knew the real Orange County was so cool? At a pair of parties held in the surf capital last month, hosted by WWDMAGIC exhibitors Roxy and Paul Frank, young women demonstrated that the fashion vibe goes far beyond board shorts and jeans. First, the svelte cast of the new series “Surf Girls,” Roxy’s collaboration with MTV, had a chance to really let their hair down at the wrap party July 28 at the Huntington Beach headquarters of Quiksilver Inc. “It’s good now that we’re not together 24/7,” said Jen Pollock, the short-board winner of the eight-week series that showcased 14 surfers competing to win a spot on the World Championship Tour. Pollock, dressed in Seven jeans, an eyelet lace top and Steve Madden shoes, mingled with her fashionable co-stars, dressed in everything from hand-painted cargos to ruffled minis, while signing autographs for the throng of employees, fans and family members attending the event. Three days later, Paul Frank opened its South Coast Plaza store to a slew of retro-hip fans dressed in everything from drapy tops and loud pants to quirky dresses — and yes, there were a few monkeys thrown in for good measure. Seems like O.C. is the new Silverlake in terms of West Coast cool.
