They Are Wearing: That Twenties Show

The Prohibition era is in full swing—if the scene at this weekend’s Governors Island jazz party was any indication.

The Prohibition era was in full swing — in spirit, at least — this weekend at the Jazz Age Lawn Party held by Michael Arenella and His Dreamland Orchestra.

The city’s Gatsby girls and Fitzgerald fellows descended on Governors Island for the summer’s last retro bash and naturally, the vintage threads were out in full force.

Some, like Gretchen Fenston and Erika Munro, opted to make theirs using Thirties patterns. (It helps that the latter is a costume designer, who also won the day’s pie contest with her shoofly pie, and the former, a milliner and Condé Nast archivist.) Others, including Matthew Woods and Aimee Bayles took the mass-market — yet no less stylish — route; Bayles’ flapper-esque dress came from H&M while Woods’ seersucker suit was Uniqlo.

People should have fun with fashion, even men,” said a dandified Voon Chew. “Everyone just thinks of a fringe dress, but there’s so much more.”
