New York designers have made it to the top — of city government, anyway. Members of the Council of Fashion Designers of America were feted by Donna Hanover Giuliani at Gracie Mansion Monday night — a goodwill gesture to the fashion industry.

Two and a half years ago, the CFDA told Rudy Giuliani that the fashion industry needed some recognition by New York’s mayor — something they didn’t feel they were getting, the mayor’s wife said.

“Rudy remembered that conversation and that’s why we’re having this reception tonight,” said Giuliani. “We know the fashion industry is very important to New York. It’s like Broadway or the Metropolitan Museum, it’s something people come to New York for and we have to treasure it.”

While Giuliani, a veteran TV newswoman, said she’s only “covered a couple” of fashion shows as a reporter, she hopes to attend some during the fall collections. “I’d like to go to them, but I am a working person too,” she said, referring to her current position as an anchor on the Television Food Network.
