CHANEL PROMOTION: Annette Falso has been promoted to vice president of product marketing and training, Chanel Fragrance and Beauté. She will oversee all training initiatives for the Chanel Beauté and Fragrance Division in the new post. Falso joined Chanel in 1985 and most recently served as vice president of new product development. Beauté.
MUGLER MOVES: Jean-Francois Leprince has been named managing director for France at Thierry Mugler Parfums. Most recently, he was the commercial director for France at Groupe Clarins. Leprince has also worked for the Carita and Lacoste brands and at L’Oréal. He succeeds Alain Semavoine.
SNIFFING AROUND: Quality King Distributors has expressed interest in acquiring Parlux Fragrances, the marketer of brands like Perry Ellis, Fred Hayman Beverly Hills, Ocean Pacific and Jockey. Parlux, which also markets and manufacturers a line called Animal Parfums, reported sales of $70 million for the fiscal year ending in March, up 1.6 percent. Last year, Quality King, a privately held fragrance distributor and marketer, bought novelty fragrance company Smell This.
DEL DOUBLES: Del Laboratories Inc.’s third-quarter profits shot up 114.7 percent to $5.1 million, or 57 cents per diluted share, from $2.4 million, or 27 cents, in the year-ago quarter. Sales for the period ended Sept. 30 were up 20.8 percent to $95.2 million from $78.8 million. Growth was driven by continued momentum in the Uniondale, N.Y.-based firm’s cosmetic business, led by the Sally Hansen brand, which saw its market share in nail care rise to 26 percent for the quarter. For the nine months, profits climbed 110.3 percent to $14.6 million, or $1.64 per diluted share, from $7 million, or 82 cents, a year ago. Results were pumped up by an aftertax gain of $1.5 million, or 17 cents per basic share, on the sale of vacant land in the first quarter this year. Sales jumped 18.7 percent to $268.4 million from $226.1 million.
FACTS & FIGURES: For the first half ending in June, Ales Groupe — which includes the Lierac, Phyto and Caron brands —registered a 13.6 percent increase in sales to $69.4 million. Its operating profit in the period spiked 121 percent to $10.5 million. The firm’s nine-month sales for this year were up 11.6 percent to $97.9 million. Dollar figures are converted from the euro at current exchange rates.
THIRD TIME’S A CHARM: Bobbi Brown launched her third book, "Beauty Evolution: A Guide to a Lifetime of Beauty," with a party on Tuesday night that was co-hosted by In Style magazine. Guests were able to view a gallery display of life-size photographs from the book. Beauty Evolution is a 224-page work that is intended to help guide women at any age to look and feel their best. The tome, published by HarperResource, showcases women of various generations, races, styles and sizes and sells for $29.95.
GET A GRIP: Work out and smell good too? That’s what a Macy’s Herald Square promotion for a new version of Jean Paul Gaultier’s Le Male is attempting for the next week — almost. The limited-edition fragrance looks and operates like an arm-building hand grip but, when squeezed, out comes a spritz of eau de toilette. Gaultier’s licensee Beauté Prestige International and the gym chain Crunch got together for the event, which features models, music and a raffle for a free one-year membership to Crunch. The hand grip scent and a refill bottle come in a kit called the Big Biceps Spray (4,000 were produced and priced at $65), which is carried at 111 department stores, including Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Burdines, Hecht’s and Marshall Field’s.
