Applauded by a group of American and French retailers, Marvin Traub, the former chairman of Bloomingdale’s, launched his Assouline book, “Like No Other Career,” at the American Embassy in Paris Thursday night.
After being introduced by ambassador Craig Stapleton, Traub contrasted the conditions of his first visit to France with the magnanimity of the embassy reception, attended by the likes of former French prime minister Edith Cresson, Jean Bousquet of Cacharel, Philippe Houze of Galeries Lafayette, Harrods’ Michael Ward, Saks Fifth Avenue chief Stephen I. Sadove and Jim Gold of Bergdorf Goodman.
Traub recalled landing at Utah Beach in 1944 and later being shot in the leg at Metz by a German sniper. He explained the mayor of Metz discovered some years ago that he’d been shot in the town and invited Traub to visit. “The mayor said he was honored to discover I’d been shot in Metz,” said Traub, who visited the exact spot of his misfortune. The mayor decorated Traub for his valor.
“There was nothing I would rather do than launch [the book] in the American embassy [in Paris],” said Traub.
