NEW YORK — Louise Trotter, vice president of product design and development for women’s merchandise at Gap brand, left the company last Friday.

Gap said it is conducting a search for a successor and that candidates from inside and outside of the company will be considered. The company did not disclose why Trotter left. She joined Gap in March 2003.

The company has been struggling with recent poor sales trends and has been criticized for missing trends and presenting lackluster merchandise. It’s recovery plan includes renovating stores to a new prototype introduced earlier this spring in Denver, shifting from its historical emphasis on sportswear by adding space for petites, accessories, jewelry and personal care, and stepping up marketing efforts to target different customer segments. Company officials have also said that input from consumers and store managers on what styles work and those that don’t is being sought.
