Lauren Hutton, circa the Seventies. That was Michael Smaldone's inspiration for his fall Ann Taylor collection, which he presented Monday evening at an intimate fashion show. "I wanted to translate this ease into a collection that was graceful and effortless, but still maintained a certain poised sensibility," said the senior vice president of design. The result? Crisp shirts, sexy pencil skirts, men's wear-inspired suits and plenty of cozy knits.

Meanwhile, Shari Hershon, senior vice president of design for Ann Taylor Loft, looked to another style icon: Jackie Onassis during the Sixties. Focusing on proportions and silhouettes, Hershon piled on lots of easy layers. Key items were plaid miniskirts, shrunken and belted jackets, narrow cropped pants and ladylike sheath dresses.
