NEW YORK -- Airports and traffic came to a standstill, and schools, government offices and many businesses closed early because of Tuesday's harsh snowstorm, but that didn't deter devoted shoppers from keeping their appointment with Richard Tyler at Saks Fifth Avenue.
Nearly 200 Tyler fans braved the season's worst snow to get a first glimpse of the designer's spring collection for Anne Klein.
The two-day trunk show resulted in some $86,000 in orders.
"If they tried it on, they bought it," said Helen O'Hagan, vice president of corporate public relations for Saks. "I think if it hadn't been snowing, we would have done even better."
Some of the 190 women had traveled three hours or more to attend the show and visit the new boutique, an 1,800-square-foot shop on the flagship's second floor. They chatted with the designer -- who had accepted the Council of Fashion Designers of America's award for new talent about 15 hours earlier -- and spent $56,000 in two hours. Tyler visited the store again for about two hours on Wednesday, and rang up another $30,000.
Bestsellers included a black wool twill shawl-collar jacket, selling 18 pieces at $995; a caramel wool twill riding jacket, selling 10 pieces at $995, and a black twill jumper dress at $495, which sold 10 units.
The collection includes a lot of trousers and skirts that are somewhat longer, though still above the knee."These are cut for real customers, not the runway," O'Hagan said.
The Richard Tyler for Anne Klein show hits the road this weekend, with a stop in Atlanta for Neiman Marcus on Saturday, a visit to Saks in Chicago next Tuesday, Saks in San Francisco on Feb. 17 and Neiman's in Los Angeles on Feb. 22.
