NEW YORK — Van Cleef & Arpels promoted Claude Julien Arpels to the post of chairman, succeeding Ralph Destino, who will now become a director of the venerable jewelry firm.

After a two-year apprenticeship in the early Nineties, Arpels rejoined the company, a division of Compagnie Financière Richemont AG, in 1999 to oversee the restructuring of the firm in the U.S.
