DALLAS — The International Apparel Mart has named Victor Alfaro winner of its Rising Star award and announced finalists for the annual Dallas Fashion Awards, which recognize lines by category for design, quality and retail sales.
“We always have our eyes and ears open for someone we want to showcase, and Victor was perfect,” said Robbin Wells, vice president of marketing at the Dallas Market Center, which owns the mart. “His designs are simple but exciting, and his workmanship and quality are excellent.”
Alfaro is known for his eveningwear.
Previous winners of the Rising Star award, which isn’t given every year, include Mark Badgley and James Mischka in 1992 and Todd Oldham in 1991.
Kristi Yamaguchi, an Olympic gold medalist in figure skating in 1992, also will be honored at the fashion awards as the Mart’s Celebrity Award winner for her visibility in promoting the fashion industry. Yamaguchi is the spokeswoman for Hoechst Celanese Corp.’s “Celebrate! Acetate” campaign and appears in ads to promote the fiber.
Three Dallas Fashion Award finalists were announced in each of 10 categories. The nominees were selected by a committee of buyers and fashion press, and winners will be determined by a vote of buyers during the women’s and children’s market here Aug. 18-22.
The nominees include: Fossil, Leegin and Medalias by Foree Hunsicker in accessories; Mori Lee, Niteline and Victor Costa in bridal and formal; Cottontail Originals, Earthlings and Tickle Me in children’s wear; David Dart, Dina Bar-El and Sue Wong in contemporary; Constance Saunders, Julie & Leonard and Teri Jon by Rickie Freeman in designer dresses, and ABS, Ellen Tracy and Gruppo Americano in designer sportswear.
The other nominees are: Ann Tobias, Carol Anderson and Joseph Ribkoff in dresses; Josie, Periphery and Verena in intimate apparel; Cambridge Dry Goods Co., Prestwyck Ltd. and Richard & Co. in sportswear, and Gottex, Mossimo and Too Hot Brazil in swimwear.
The mart will mail 30,000 ballots to retailers, who can mail them back or hand them in at the mart. Winners will be announced in late August and will be honored at a press reception in New York on Sept. 12 and then during the awards ceremony here at the mart on Oct. 21.
A black-tie gala benefiting the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation is scheduled for the evening of Oct. 22 at the mart. The dinner will recognize the Dallas Fashion Award winners, as well as the recipient of the Fashion Excellence Award, a prominent designer who will be named next month.
