DENTON, Tex. -- Samuel Alexander, who has built Votre Nom into a top-performing sportswear label at the International Apparel Mart here, was indicted Thursday in Denton County Court on felony charges that he used violence to sexually assault his wife, Jennifer, on Oct. 10 last year.
The sales rep also was charged with striking and choking his wife with his hands.
Alexander posted $25,000 in bond and was released Oct. 11 following his arrest by the Carrollton Police Department. But on Monday, he was arrested again for violating an emergency protection order that was issued Oct. 11. Bail was set at $2,500 and he was transferred Tuesday by the Carrollton police to the Denton County Jail here, according to an officer at the prison.
The protection order stipulates that Alexander may not approach within 500 feet of the residence he formerly shared with his wife, infant son and two step-daughters in Carrollton, a suburb of Dallas. According to the arrest warrant, a neighbor saw Alexander sitting in his car outside the home on Oct. 14.
A trial date has not yet been set for Alexander's felony charge of aggravated sexual assault, which is punishable by five to 99 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000. The second count assault charge, a class A misdemeanor, faces a maximum penalty of up to one year in jail and a fine not to exceed $4,000.
"It was a brutal assault," said Sgt. David Sponhour, public information officer with the Carrollton Police. "I saw the pictures, and it looked like she was hit by a truck. It was pretty bad, but it could have been worse. There were bruises -- he punched her in the face and everything else. She was pretty badly beaten and taken to Parkland Hospital."
Jennifer Alexander declined to comment other than to say she had filed for divorce on Oct. 11. Attorneys for Samuel Alexander were not available for comment.
Alexander also faces a misdemeanor charge for violation of the protection order. That trial is set for March 4 in Denton County Criminal Court.
Alexander has represented Votre Nom for 12 years, according to Lisa Brigham, national sales manager in the sportswear firm's New York office. Brigham declined to comment on the charges but did say that Alexander would continue to represent the line.Votre Nom won a Dallas Fashion Award in the designer category last year, and Alexander accepted the award on the company's behalf at the Oct. 27 black-tie gala. He also represents Semplice, a collection of microfiber knits, and Potato, a line of separates.
Jennifer Alexander is also in the fashion business. She designs and sells a small collection of semiprecious jewelry through the Lilly Dodson store in Dallas, and shows a capsule line of feather-trimmed fabric handbags called Split Personality in the Gavin showroom at the International Apparel Mart.
