NEW YORK — Wendy Chivian began Monday as senior vice president of women’s apparel at Sean John.
This confirms a report on Nov. 18 that the company was negotiating with Chivian to head up the Sean John women’s division. Chivian reports to Sean Combs, chief executive officer of Sean John and will be based at 1710 Broadway here.
The women’s line will be launched for holiday 2005, which has been delayed slightly from the originally planned fall 2005 introduction.
Since July, Chivian has been president of the Perry Ellis division of Public Clothing Co. Earlier, she had been president of Anne Klein, a division of Kasper A.S.L., but left after the company was acquired by Jones Apparel Group in December.
In her Perry Ellis post, Chivian was responsible for all aspects of the Perry Ellis better collection licensed to Public Clothing.
Dan Shamdasani, Public Clothing’s ceo, couldn’t be reached for comment Monday regarding Chivian.
Todd Kahn, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Sean John, said he liked Chivian’s “experience, her energy and her ability to work on start-ups.”
“She has a real understanding of the marketplace,” he added.
Sean John, which is expected to generate $450 million in retail sales this year, launched its men’s sportswear collection in spring 1999. Last year, California billionaire Ron Burkle invested $100 million in Sean John, which underwent a retail and wholesale expansion program. The first store opened at 475 Fifth Avenue here in August and a unit is planned for the Beverly Center in Los Angeles in April. Other pending sites include Garden State Plaza in Paramus, N.J., Las Vegas, Houston, Hawaii and San Francisco. Sean John has invested in Zac Posen’s company as well.
