It’s been a hot week, following a wet month and a cold spring, which has trained fashion customers who shop early to expect anything and, come fall, they’re going to be prepared. That’s certainly evidenced by a quick survey of recent trunk shows and projected bestsellers from designers, who are placing their bets on outerwear — fur coats, trenches and bombers — plus a range of cashmere sweaters, draped dresses and evening suits to carry the season.

At Calvin Klein, a wool flannel geometric panel dress and a port wool marquisette dress worn with a raised cord coat are among the leaders for fall, as were fine wool flannel skirts with geometric panels.

Catherine Malandrino’s wool and cashmere fitted sweater with a metal chain trim, a fitted cotton voile blouse with eyelet sleeves and a silk chiffon tank dress with leather buckle straps have been top items for the designer.

Michael Kors’ cashmere interlock pullovers; stretch jersey wrap skirts with leather trim, and silk and wool satin slouch jeans have been powerhouses, selling in the range of 250 to 400 units apiece.

Donna Karan’s bestsellers at a Bergdorf Goodman trunk show recently included a long-sleeve, draped dress, a tailored body shirt, a bandage skirt with satin cummerbund and a bracelet-sleeve wrap jacket. Narciso Rodriguez’s fall event at the store was led by a black wool dress with satin inserts, a white silk dress with brown embroidery at the waist and a black wool and silk faille coat with cashmere panels.

Chanel’s record-breaking event at BG included mink-trimmed tweed jackets and coats, fitted tweed jackets with white pyramid buttons and a snap-button coat with chamellia lining.

Alexander McQueen’s show at his New York store was driven by hooded fur coats, an optical check suit and a silk faille kimono evening suit, while Gucci’s events in New York and Beverly Hills included as bestsellers its white double-face coats with duchess satin inserts, ink nylon taffeta jackets with corset belts and ebony tricotine stretch jackets.
