The industrywide discontent with too many runway shows hasn ’t lightened up,even as 7th on Sixth, the production company behind Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, looks to expand the already monthlong show schedule with a fifth fashion circuit destination:Los Angeles.Plans are under way for a West Coast edition of MBFW in April, but there ’s no assurances that major stores and retailers will be willing to make the trek after New York,London,Milan and Paris.

Meanwhile, designers are also expected to continue moving their shows from town to town,as Balenciaga is reportedly looking at staging its second New York show, renewing the Manhattan- versus-Paris rivalry over bragging rights to who has the hottest shows. This year, however,a lot of editors and buyers are placing their bets on that old dark horse,London,to show some renewed energy, but a lot of smaller designers, stung by the global economic downturn for luxury goods, are opting to skip the runways for the foreseeable future and are presenting informally or through look books, instead.
