NEW YORK — Wing Son Garments, a Toronto-based activewear manufacturer, has bought a 50 percent stake in Yoko Devereaux, a Brooklyn-based fashion label, for an undisclosed amount.

“For a growing brand like Yoko Devereaux, a relationship like this is key,” said Andy Salzer, creative director of Yoko Devereaux, who said he felt relieved to back away from handling the noncreative aspects of the business.

Yoko Devereaux is known for sporty fashion that puts cotton fleece and jersey to unexpected uses, including pieces that are loosely inspired by traditional tailoring. The label is sold through the namesake store in the hip Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, as well as in about 30 stores in the U.S. and about a dozen units in Japan. Price points range from $52 to $400.

Some key components of Yoko Devereaux’s future expansion are likely to include the opening of additional Yoko Devereaux stores, a complete redesign of the Yoko Devereaux Web site to include e-commerce, more international distribution and the creation of a higher-end sub-brand, according to Salzer.

Wing Son Group owns rk Stores, a women’s wear chain in Canada, and has divisions for premium home fixtures, private equity investment and real-estate development. But the manufacturing arm, Wing Son Garments Ltd., is the core business. Founder and chief executive Chak Cheng has said one of the company’s mandates is to promote and sustain North American manufacturing.

This week Yoko Devereaux will unveil a line of functional objects inspired by the movie A Clockwork Orange and designed in collaboration with DFC, a Mexico City–based houseware brand.
