Yohji Yamamoto to Design Jewelry Line

Yohji Yamamoto is delving into gems for the first time.

PARIS — Yohji Yamamoto is delving into gems for the first time.

The iconoclastic designer has teamed up with Japanese cultured pearl specialist Mikimoto, which established the world’s first pearl farm in 1888, to launch a new jewelry brand whose name is being kept under wraps.

The first collection, using a spectrum of pearls from white to black, will be unveiled during couture week here in July. The jewelry will be distributed in both Yamamoto and Mikimoto stores, as well as select distribution points internationally, the companies said in a joint release.

The tie-up marks the third collaboration for Yamamoto, who in 2002 launched his Y-3 sportswear brand in collaboration with Adidas, followed by a co-branding with Italian luggage specialist Mandarina Duck in 2006. En route, Yamamoto also worked on a one-shot collaboration with British shoe brand Dr. Martens.
