NEW YORK — Forward, a Lower East Side "incubator space" at 72 Orchard Street nurturing emerging fashion talent, has selected its second round of designers to showcase at the shop.
The six designers will retail their fall lines and be groomed in how to run a business, with the goal of eventually opening their own stores on the Lower East Side. They were selected by the Lower East Side Business Improvement District, which founded and subsidizes Forward, and the Style Council, a group of writers, editors and fashion experts. Over 50 designers had presented collections for consideration.
The designers are:
Jemima Biscombe, born in Trinidad & Tobago and inspired by her grandmother, a dressmaker. Her collection, called Jackman, features empire waisted cotton dresses.
Rebecca Min Lee and jewelry design partner Megan Pritchard, produceSwayback, a feminine, but edgy accessories line.
Erica Rosenberg, who designs Erica, a stretchy, lacy, one-size-fits-all women’s underwear line guaranteed to be "pinch-free."
Jennifer Thomas, who makes art-inspired, custom-detailed handbags made from glazed goatskin, gator-embossed cowhide and antique lace.
Desirée Zondag, who specializes in avant-garde sportswear and accessories, using recycled fabrics, corsetry, pleats and bias cuts.
Jasmin Zorlu, who designs 1920s-inspired hand-formed sculptural hats.
The shop also still sells merchandise from the first round of designers in the Forward program — Jennifer Dwin, Angela Theresa Kettler, Franklin Rowe and Siri Wilson.
Forward was conceived by the BID’s executive director, Andrew Flamm.
