NEW YORK — Bloomingdale’s is "the quintessential New York store" and the city’s most popular, too, according to the new "Zagat Survey of New York City Shopping," released Monday. The guide rates 2,193 stores based on reviews from 7,176 shoppers.
Ranking second-most-popular is Century 21, followed by Saks Fifth Avenue, then Bed, Bath & Beyond, Barneys New York, Macy’s, Banana Republic, Bergdorf Goodman, Anthropologie and Costco Wholesale. Each store is rated for merchandise, presentation, service and prices.
Rounding out top 20: Metropolitan Museum of Art, ABC Carpet & Home, H&M, Henri Bendel, Kate’s Paperie, Loehmann’s, Ann Taylor, Ann Taylor Loft, Tiffany and Gap.
Rated on a scale of zero to 30, with 30 being the best, Barneys, for example, scored a 26 for merchandise but only 19 for service due to its "infamously self-important salespeople, though they’re trying harder to be civil," the guide says.
Some other findings include:
Ralph Lauren was voted the favorite designer, followed by Giorgio Armani and Donna Karan.
SoHo is the favorite shopping neighborhood in the city, followed by the Upper East Side and Greenwich Village.
76 percent of the shoppers said they were bargain hunters, and 69 percent preferred boutiques over department stores.
In the women’s designer boutique category, Diane Von Furstenberg The Shop took the number-one slot, followed by Chanel, Carolina Herrera, Christian Dior and Chloe. The guide’s store description praises Von Furstenberg’s clothing and its wide age appeal.
The two most popular activewear stores were Patagonia and Paragon; Vera Wang topped bridal; Turnball & Asser was best in service, and Leather Man and Toys in Babeland scored as the top sex shops.
Etro’s show, titled “The Tree of Life,” was a celebration of the house’s 50th anniversary. “My father founded the company in 1968, which was the year of counterculture and psychedelia. It’s really a show that celebrates that and the paisley design of India and its origin,” said Veronica Etro. #wwdfashion #mfw #ss18 (📷: @delphineachard)
