A PAUL SMITH ALPHABET: Paul Smith’s fans descended upon the designer’s Covent Garden boutique Friday afternoon, when he made an appearance to sign copies of his new book, “A to Z.” The 200-page tome takes an alphabetical journey through Smith’s inspirations and offers a glimpse into his own design process. Alongside a look at Smith’s touchstones ranging from architecture through to Japan to zebras, the book features Smith’s own sketches, scribbles and photographs. Smith described the tone of the book, which takes the form of a conversation between the designer and journalist Olivier Wicker, as “very honest. It was just a conversation — the whole thing was done in two hours,” said the no-nonsense designer.
