ABOUT THE WOMEN: Fashion and beauty mergers and acquisitions specialist Karine Ohana, owner of the boutique M&A firm Ohana & Co., teamed up with Caudalie presidents and founders Mathilde and Bertrand Thomas to throw her annual philanthropic lunch in honor of International Women’s Day. “I’m going to have to hold a men’s day,” quipped Bertrand Thomas, who noted that 90 percent of his firm’s employees are women. “At Caudalie, every day is a woman’s day.” The guest list included about 30, including speakers Susan Rockefeller, John Kluge Jr. and Adam Braun. The event was held in the wine lounge at the Caudalie Spa at Manhattan’s Plaza hotel and catered by famed chef Daniel Boulud.
Rockefeller spoke movingly of her work with Oceana and her commitment to saving the world’s oceans, which has extended to a 15-minute film called “Oceans of Mermaids” and a limited-edition jewelry collection for QVC for Earth Day. Kluge’s focus was on waste management in developing countries and how it affects girls’ ability to attend school after menstruation begins, or in his own words, “the unspeakable world of sh-t and plumbing.” Braun, founder and chief executive officer of Pencils of Promise, a nonprofit organization that builds schools and increases access to education for children in the developing world, discussed the power of a simple pencil and how a partnership with Give Back Brands pumped $250,000 into the nonprofit, which he used to build 100 schools in two months.
