ALL ABOUT ACE: The Ace Hotel — already a hipster destination in Manhattan’s Midtown West and home to two trendy boutiques, No. 8A and Opening Ceremony — is upping its fashion quotient even further for New York Fashion Week. The hotel will partner with the New York-based Shapeways, a 3D printing community and marketplace, on an interactive design experience and series of lectures in the lobby on Feb. 9. With designers Michael Schmidt, Anna Sheffield, Chris Habana and more, as well as computer-aided design modelers, guests will have the opportunity to create custom product designs using 3D-printing and explore how digital technology can revolutionize fashion. The experience will be feted with a party later that evening, culminating in the unveiling of a 3D-printed dress designed by Schmidt and Francis Bitonti modeled by Dita Von Teese. (Von Teese, who has worn several stage costumes designed by Schmidt, told WWD she is “thrilled” to debut the gown.) In addition, Material ConneXion, the global materials and innovation consultancy, will present an exhibit in the hotel throughout the month of Feb. showcasing sustainable, creative reuse of materials — from thermo-chromatic fabric to dried algae leaves — in a fashion context.
