AKT-ING UP IN THE HAMPTONS: This summer, boutique fitness fans bound for the Hamptons will have three new outposts. AKT inMotion now has pop-up clubs in Sag Harbor, Southampton and East Hampton that offer an assortment of heartrate-raising classes and private sessions. (With many regulars flocking to the beach as of Memorial Day, the seven-unit company has temporarily closed its Brooklyn club until the sun-worshippers return this fall.)
Sarah Jessica Parker, Kelly Ripa, Shakira, Sarah Easley and Kirna Zabete are a few of AKT inMotion’s devotees. Before setting up her own shop for multidisciplinary crosstraining and dance, AKT founder Anna Kaiser worked for Tracy Anderson, appeared as the principal dancer in Disney’s “Enchanted” and featured in Denise Austin’s workout videos among other things. When Reinhart Creative unveils her company’s new Web site on June 10, fashion will be among the categories with a more prominent role. There will be more stylish pieces from AKT’s own label and Heroine activewear will be added to the mix. Heroine’s black and camouflage $80 shorts in a futuristic fabric and black $90 leggings with mesh insets should be big hits this summer, according to Kaiser, as well as AKT’s black $30 leggings (which some are wearing with the Heroine shorts) and black $25 anti-grip gloves (a winner with plank, pushup and downward dog lovers alike.) With may of her fans spending eight to 10 hours a week in her classes, Kaiser said, “They want to wear something new and fresh so they don’t hit a plateau and fizzle out. Also being in New York, we are all so excited about fashion. If someone walks into class with a new pair of really cute leggings, everyone will run over to see where she got them from.
“It’s probably the only hour of the day where we look at ourselves in the mirror. We want to be inspired, we want to fit into the community and fit into the style even if you’re doing yoga,” she said. “It is much like if you work at Barneys [New York], you will wear something very different than if you are working on Wall Street.”
Eastley, a Kaiser follower since 2010 when the classes were more of an underground, word-of-mouth movement, said, “Number-one it’s results-based and you tend to keep going because it’s fun.”
As a sign of its confidence in activewear being an ongoing trend, Kirna Zabete started offering it as a separate category last week. “Who doesn’t want to do comfortable and active and have it be cool and appropriate?” Eastley said. “It’s a great trend for summer that will carry on and on and on.”
