Alber Elbaz has moved into the patron seat of the Designer for Tomorrow fashion talent award. The designer follows on the heels of Zac Posen, Tommy Hilfiger, Stella McCartney and Marc Jacobs.
The annual Europe-wide award, which was introduced in 2009, is sponsored by German specialty store chain Peek & Cloppenburg and its online shop, Fashion ID. The winner is given the opportunity to stage a show of his or her collection during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin the following year, and also receives mentoring support from patron Elbaz. In addition, the designated “Designer for Tomorrow” gains commercial experience via Peek & Cloppenburg, which has cooperated with the winners on a variety of projects and collaborations.
Elbaz has already selected his top 15 from over 200 young designer hopefuls and together with the Designer for Tomorrow jury board will narrow down that selection this week to the five finalists. Elbaz will travel to Berlin in early June to meet the finalists, where he will view their collections prior to the competition show during the upcoming Berlin Fashion Week in late June.
“Design is at the heart of the fashion industry and I feel very honored to be part of this year’s award and to share my experience and knowledge with the new talents of the next generation,” Elbaz said. “I am personally looking forward to getting to know the people behind the designs.”
