ALEJANDRO’S ALL RIGHT: “My kids told me I sound worse than [former] Mayor [Michael] Bloomberg when I practiced my Spanish on them,” confessed Teen Vogue’s Amy Astley as she introduced Alejandro Ingelmo, winner of the Artistic Achievement Award at Wednesday night’s El Museo Gala benefitting the El Museo del Barrio at Cipriani 42nd Street, “but at least I’ll get the names right.”
The designer, a fourth-generation shoemaker who misplaced his speech on the way to the podium, nonetheless was quick to confirm the importance of family in his work and inspiration, as well as thank his “right and left hand (wo)man, Courtney Bennett who answers my calls at least 10 times a day”.
The occasion marked the first time an accessories designer has won the award as well as Ingelmo being its youngest recipient. The designer’s guests included Jessica Joffe and model Kiara Kabukuru as well as his family, with both parents Esther and Toby Ingelmo flying in from Miami. Other guests at the event included Susan Sarandon, Miss Universe Gabriela Isler, François Payard and photographer Mark Seliger, who all admired special large wooden candelabras designed by Brooklyn based artist Ray Smith that served as table centerpieces.
