ON DISPLAY: Alexander Wang hit Tokyo on Wednesday, making back to back appearances at his pop-up shop at Isetan and an installation of special products at Dover Street Market Ginza.

In line with the brand’s retail concepts featuring living areas, the Isetan pop-up, which will be open through Oct. 23, features a quilted leather punching bag, a leather hammock and a cargo net exterior. It evokes the feeling of a “tricked out basement,” said Wang. “Like a teenager living in the basement of his parents’ house.” For the project, Wang rolled out his biggest-ever line of exclusive items — over 35 pieces — with several of them incorporating Japanese source material or creativity. These include limited-edition t-shirts made of a rare, lightweight Japanese cotton as well as reinterpretations of the best-selling Marti backpack in a canvas from Osaka and in leather from Wang’s 2009 fall collection.

Over at Comme des Garçons’ Dover Street Market store, Wang’s shop-in-shop is hosting a special installation of black inflatable pool toys combined with a set of special mannequins eerily veiled in long black hair.

Wang expressed excitement about interacting with his Japanese fans and their fresh, creative approach to wearing his clothing. “It’s so inspiring because they totally take it and they flip it upside down, backwards, inside out and there’s such experimentation. You know, that’s really what kind of inspires me.”
