TABLET RASA: On Sunday afternoon, one could be forgiven for assuming that Alexander Wang was already en route to Paris and not at the center of a p.r. scrum at the Samsung Lounge, a mezzanine overlooking the main lobby of the Lincoln Center tents.
“Leaving right after this,” the designer clarified between sips of hot tea with lemon. “Sorry, my throat is so sore.”

He’d been summoned to the space to discuss his collaboration with Samsung Galaxy, which will see the designer construct a limited-edition handbag inspired by the various photos, doodles and images taken on the Note II, the touchscreen device (natch) by a select circle of “influencers” he handpicked. Sales from the bag will benefit Art Start, a charity seeking to foster the creativity of at-risk youth.
“It’s abstract in the sense that we’re working with a lot of our close friends and different people that we like to partner with in this collective way, hopefully to create something unique,” said Wang, safely sequestered on a corner couch. “I’m going to look at the images all together and create a print for a bag that will be sold.
“Technology is so important to how I work and how I get inspired,” he continued. “So we’re hoping we can create a new facet to inspiration, to bring in a new perspective.”
Though Wang remained tight-lipped on his upcoming debut collection for Balenciaga, he was pleased with the reception his namesake line garnered. “I’m glad people had a good response to it. It’s definitely a good feeling. We all worked really hard this season, so I was really proud of what we did,” he said. “One down, one to go.”
