Alexis Mabille Curates Cecil Beaton Exhibition

The show, with Paris as its central theme, features photographs of key figures from the fashion, artistic and literary worlds.

WHO’S WHO: Alexis Mabille has added a new feather to his hat — exhibition curator.

The designer helped put together a collection of Cecil Beaton’s photographs for an exhibition at Sotheby’s in Paris to run from July 2 to 31, with an opening event set for 7 p.m. on July 1, just after Mabille’s couture show.

The exhibit showcases Beaton’s photos of iconic figures from the fashion, artistic and literary world that reads like a who’s who, including Cristobal Balenciaga, Yves Saint Laurent, Madame Grès, Elsa Schiaparelli, Gabrielle Chanel, Hubert de Givenchy, Christian Dior, Serge Gainsbourg, Jean Cocteau, Rudolf Nureyev, Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí.

Mabille was asked to curate the exhibition and design its setting after Sotheby’s Paris recently acquired the photographer’s archives, he explained.
“In my cultural heritage of fashion, he is someone who greatly inspired me,” added Mabille.
From the 15,000 negatives acquired by the auction house, Mabille helped select 30, with Paris as the exhibition’s central theme, he explained.
