AND THE WINNER IS: Sir Paul Smith is to receive the Outstanding Achievement Award at this year’s British Fashion Awards, the British Fashion Council said Monday. Smith, who started out in the fashion business in 1970, when he opened his first boutique in Nottingham, England, will be presented with the award during the ceremony at London’s Savoy hotel on Monday. The accolade celebrates “the achievement of a designer whose work has had an exceptional impact on global fashion,” the BFC said. “Paul Smith, the brand and the man, contributes a great deal to our industry commercially and creatively; his signature style is recognized throughout the world,” said Harold Tillman, chairman of the BFC. Last year, Alexander McQueen was posthumously awarded the BFC’s Outstanding Achievement Award.
