ANNIVERSARY TIME: “The first time I came here was three decades ago as a backpacker,” said Bulgari chief executive officer Jean-Christophe Babin on Thursday night at the first of two exclusive dinner parties down on Sydney Harbour to celebrate Bulgari’s 130th birthday. How things have changed in 30 years. According to Babin, in terms of sales per capita, Australia has emerged as Bulgari’s number-one market — hence Sydney as the choice of location for the jeweler’s second 130th anniversary bash, after a party in Rome last month. Aussiewood royalty Eric Bana and Rachael Taylor joined Babin, Bulgari vice president Sabina Belli and nearly 100 local and international editors in a marquee on the front lawn of Carthona, a sprawling Gothic sandstone mansion in Point Piper that is owned by Tony and Roslyn Oxley. “I’m obviously from Australia and spend a lot of time here, but you don’t often get to see these sorts of properties,” said Bana, the face of Bulgari’s Man Extreme men’s fragrance.
