WHO SHOT JR: JR, the prize-winning artist, is already working on an encore for the New York City Ballet. Having photographed the 6,500-square-foot massive mural The Eye of New York city ballet as part of the 2014 Art Series installation, he is now developing and will direct an original theatrical work that will premiere at the company’s April 29 opening night for the spring season. His eight-minute pièce d’occasion will be set to an original score composed for the New York City Ballet Orchestra by Woodkid. The work will also feature more than 40 NYCB dancers and guest artist Lil Buck, the Memphis jookin dancer who has worked with Madonna and Yo-Yo Ma among others. For his debut as a director, JR is brainstorming with NYCB ballet master in chief Peter Martins to translate his ideas for the stage.
The yet-to-be-named piece will have video projections and costumes by JR (created in collaboration with NYCB’s director of costumes Marc Happel, NYCB’s Director of Costumes) and lighting by its resident lighting director Mark Stanley.
